NBA: 8 Free agent signings that torpedoed franchises
1. Chandler Parsons, Dallas Mavericks
The contract: 4 years, $94 million (2016)
Being a second-round pick of the 2011 NBA Draft, it’s safe to say that Chandler Parsons had a pretty good career in the NBA. It wasn’t until injuries really derailed him that the narrative around Parsons truly changed. And the contract that he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2016 NBA offseason.
After four years of great production (split between the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks), Parsons entered the 2016 offseason as one of the bigger-named free agents. However, there was one concern – he was coming off knee surgery that forced him to miss the end of the regular season and the Mavs’ short playoff run. If nothing else, that should’ve been a red flag that the Grizzlies should’ve read a little more into.
During his three seasons with the Grizzlies, Parsons only appeared in 95 games and averaged just seven points on 39 percent shooting from the field overall in an average of 20 minutes per game. He was not the max player that the Grizzlies envisioned that they were getting and officially triggered the start of a rebuild in Memphis.
