Could Jaylen Brown end the Boston Celtics dynasty before it even begins?
Jaylen Brown may end the Boston Celtics dynasty before it even begins.
After Game 3 of the 2022 NBA Finals, while holding a 2-1 lead over the Golden State Warriors, it was looking like the beginning of a new dynasty. The Boston Celtics were young, deeper, and looked like the better team.
The Celtics would go on to lose the NBA Finals but the overwhelming expectation was that their time was coming. The dynamic duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum looked like the next great duo in the NBA that would win multiple championships. It may not have happened in 2022, but the overwhelming thought was that it would come in 2023 or shortly after.
Now all that could be in jeopardy.
But not because they can’t win a championship this season. In fact, they’re one of the shorthand favorites to win it all this season. Instead, their future is now blurry thanks at least in part to the recent comments made by Jaylen Brown.
Jaylen Brown was cryptic about his future with the Boston Celtics
When asked about his future with the team, Brown was unnecessarily…vague.
"“I don’t know. As long as I’m needed. It’s not up to me,” Brown said. “We’ll see how they feel about me over time and I feel about them over time. Hopefully, whatever it is, it makes sense. But I will stay where I’m wanted. I will stay where I’m needed and treated correct.”"
Brown could’ve easily said that he believes he would be a Celtic for life and that he loves it in Boston. He…didn’t. And made everything all the more confusing than it needed to be.
He tried to backtrack on those comments recently, but what he said is what he said. And it will not make anything any clearer for this team, no matter what happens in the playoffs.
This is now a situation that deserves monitoring heading into the offseason. Brown will be eligible for a contract extension this offseason and if he doesn’t sign one, ho boy, it will get interesting.
Who knows exactly what is going on right now between Brown and the Celtics, if there’s even anything happening? But, where there is smoke there’s usually a fire.
And to say that there hasn’t been at least some smoke with Brown in Boston would be a flat-out lie.
This was a totally unnecessary storyline that could’ve completely been avoided. But for one reason or another, Brown decided not to.
I’m not saying this is the end of the dynamic duo in Boston but it’s certainly an added element that perhaps the franchise didn’t envision a little less than a year ago. What seemed like a surefire dynasty in the making is now in question. Will Brown blow up the dynasty before it even happens?
