Bold prediction No. 3: This series will be decided on the defensive end of the floor
For as many offensive stars that will be featured in this first-round series between the Knicks and Cavs, I predict that the winner will largely be determined by whichever team performs at a higher level on the defensive end of the floor. And if that does end up being the case, the Cavs have to like their chances heading into the start of this series.
Cleveland finished the season with the No. 1 defensive rating in the league. The Knicks struggled for much of the season on that end of the floor and finished with the 19th-best defensive rating this season. There’s no question that the best defense in the league will be tested, though. New York finished with a top 5 offensive rating this season.
The big question continues to revolve around Julius Randle’s availability. If he is available and the Knicks are all hands on deck, it could change the trajectory of this series. If he’s out, it’s one less offensive weapon that the Cavs will have to prepare for.
It’s certainly something to keep an eye on but whichever team steps up on the defensive end the most is likely the one that’s going to advance to the conference semifinals.
