Offseason demand No. 3: Do not re-sign both Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma

In a vacuum, you never want to lose talent. In an ideal world, you re-sign two of your top three scorers that are heading into free agency. However, if the last season and a half is any indication, I don’t believe that the Wizards would move the needle much this offseason by re-signing both Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis. In fact, I would go all the way to say that it wouldn’t make much sense at all.

In fairness, the Kristaps and Kuzma 2-player lineups for the team measured out quite well. And it’s no surprise; they were two of the team’s most consistent players this season. However, I don’t think a foundation of Beal, Kristaps, and Kuzma is going to make any noise in the Eastern Conference next season.

Even if they can all remain healthy and play at a high level, that’s not a team with a very high ceiling. And unless the Wizards are simply playing to make the postseason, re-signing both of them this offseason doesn’t make sense.

What the Wizards should do is re-sign one of them and then use some of the other money to continue to surround Beal and Kuzma or Kristaps (not both) with additional talent this offseason.
