Draymond Green, player option

While technically not a free agent, Draymond Green’s time in Golden State could just about finished. Unless they prove everyone wrong and win the championship this year, heck even if they win, Green is gone. The Pistons have more than enough offensive firepower, it’s their defense that needs attending to. Outside of Gobert for that four-year stretch, who has been the face of defense? That’s right, Draymond Green.

When you think of the Golden State dynasty who is the most vocal? If you say anyone other than Michigan State’s finest Draymond Green, you must have been kicked in the nether region. Oops. Outside of Bojan Bogdanovic, Alec Burks, and Cory Joseph, there are not many veterans on this roster. The fit has always been a question with Green and a lack of shooters, but a culture change can cover all that up. Re-instilling a “Bad Boy” feel in the city of Detroit is all the NBA needs. Sure, the league has bad guys and their narratives, but a team of hard-nosed defensive stalwarts can place fear in these jump-shooting offenses’ hearts.

We have talked much about his off-the-court benefits but let’s examine his on-the-court benefits as well. No one is immune to father time (Unless you’re talking about you LeBron James), and Draymond is no longer the front-runner for defensive player of the year, but he is better than 95% of the league on defense.

His communication skills are unmatched on the defensive end and his playmaking is still elite. If there was a position the Pistons were lacking talent it would have to be both forward spots. Draymond could fill one of them and help with the rebrand as well. Regardless of who is on the sidelines, you will always have a coach on the court.
