NBA Trade Rumors: Miami Heat could circle back to target Kyrie Irving in S&T?
NBA Trade Rumors: After registering interest in Kyrie Irving at the NBA Trade Deadline, the Miami Heat could circle back to him this offseason.
When Kyrie Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks at this past year’s NBA Trade Deadline, the belief was that there was not much interest in the disgruntled guard. However, there was at least one other team that submitted a trade offer to the Brooklyn Nets for Kyrie.
According to a recent report, the Miami Heat made an offer at the trade deadline for Kyrie. It’s not exactly known what the team offered but it clearly was not on the same level of what the Mavs offered. Thus, Kyrie became a Mav.
Interestingly enough, according to this same report, under the assumption that the Heat is going to explore the star market hard this offseason, there’s a chance that they could revisit their previous interest in Kyrie, who is now a free agent.
Even though Kyrie’s a free agent, because of their salary cap situation, the Heat would have to explore sign-and-trade options in order to acquire him. That could prove to be difficult considering it’s already been reported that the Mavs don’t intend on helping any team sign Kyrie via a sign-and-trade.
Nevertheless, this is another added element to the Kyrie drama that could be on the horizon.
Why the Miami Heat may be interested in pursuing Kyrie Irving
On one hand, this may seem like just added smoke. Considering how much the Heat were struggling in February, I’m not sure it would be that surprising that they made a low-risk offer for Kyrie at the deadline. The big question is whether there’s a scenario where they could be interested in him again.
I think the path is pretty simple in that scenario. And it probably starts with striking out on other pursuits for stars. I don’t think Kyrie is going to be at the top of the Heat’s list entering the offseason.
Even though Kyrie is one of the most offensively talented guards in the league right now, I don’t envision Miami making him their top target this offseason. It would be malpractice if he was. At the same rate, if the Heat doesn’t believe they have a decent shot at landing another star, I would not be surprised if they circled back that previous interest this summer.
The Heat has to feel as if they’re one star away from winning a title. Maybe there’s a scenario where Kyrie is that final piece.
