The Toronto Raptors will curiously re-sign Fred VanVleet
The stars were aligning for the Toronto Raptors to hit the reset button or, at the very least, the retooling one. Through the first stage of the offseason, it doesn’t appear as if that’s something the Raptors have any interest in doing. They didn’t trade OG Anunoby or Pascal Siakam at the NBA Draft. And if the recent reporting is any indication, it seems as though the Raptors are on the cusp of running it back next season.
And one big indication of that will be what the Raptors end up deciding when it comes to Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr. with their respective free agency decisions. I predict that the Raptors will at least re-sign one of them, most likely VanVleet. Trent is a good, young player but I seem to believe that the Raptors view VanVleet as the most valuable of the two. He will be brought back as the Raptors look to give this core one more chance.
Especially after watching the Miami Heat’s run in the NBA Playoffs, you can’t help but feel like a core of VanVleet, Anunoby, Scottie Barnes, and Siakam can’t take a huge step forward next season. At the very least, they should be able to sneak in as a top 6 seed.
