The Spurs help the Heat
Instead of using the Brooklyn Nets, the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers would recruit the San Antonio Spurs in order to get a deal done. The framework of this package would follow a similar path to the previous idea in which Duncan Robinson, Caleb Martin, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Nikola Jovic, along with practically all of the Heat’s draft future would be sent to Portland.
Miami would get Damian Lillard and the Spurs would acquire Tyler Herro along with two second-round picks from Miami. With cap space, it’s easy to see why the Spurs could be a candidate to help the Heat and Blazers. Herro is an interesting, talented young layer that you would trust under the tutelage of Gregg Popovich.
If there’s any coach (perhaps other than Erik Spoelstra) that will be able to find the most value in talent such as Herro, it’s Popovich. Considering San Antonio is in the beginning stages of a rebuild, taking on Herro’s contract won’t be that difficult of an ask.
And, hey, maybe Herro does end up being a huge piece for the Spurs (along with Victor Wembanyama) and they become competitive sooner rather than later.
