NBA Rumors: Looking to make another low-risk, high-reward move this offseason, the Los Angeles Lakers could explore signing Christian Wood.
The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to round out their roster heading into the lull of the NBA offseason, largely when many in and around front offices take time away from work. That likely begins to happen after the conclusion of the NBA Summer League.
The Lakers, though, before they get to that point, will be looking to add a couple of more tweaks to their roster. One of those could be taking another flier on a big. According to a recent report (subscription required), one potential target could be Christian Wood.
Adding to that report, the Lakers are “actively” looking for a stretch-5. This report makes it pretty clear and obvious that Los Angeles could be eyeing a move for Wood. He’s not an ideal stretch-5 but from an offensive standpoint, he may be the best one left on the open market. The big question is whether or not the Lakers believe they could get the best out of Wood and whether or not he fits on this team heading into next season.
The Los Angeles Lakers have made lemonade out of lemons this offseason
A potential signing of Wood would track with how the Lakers have approached the offseason. Without much flexibility heading into the offseason, Los Angeles has made several low-risk, high-reward signings in free agency.
It started with Cam Reddish and Jaxson Hayes. Wood would fall right into that category of talented players that are still looking for it to all click for them in the NBA. However, the difference with Wood is that he is much more of a proven player.
Even though many say that the idea of signing Wood is a lot better than actually signing Wood; he’s coming off a season in which he averaged 17 points and seven rebounds on 38 percent shooting from 3-point range.
Wood, for all his limitations on the defensive end of the floor, is a certified scorer. There are not many questions about his ability to put the ball in the basket. Whether it leads to winning basketball is another different conversation.
But on talent alone, there are many reasons to believe that he would make sense for the Lakers. If Los Angeles could find the right role for him, he could end up being a good signing for a team that is looking for discounts at this point in the offseason.
