Knicks may not have to wait much longer to pursue pipe dream of Joel Embiid
New York Knicks may not have to wait much longer to pursue Joel Embiid.
The New York Knicks have had a quiet, yet productive offseason. By trading Obi Toppin, they helped sort out their logjam in the frontcourt. And by acquiring Donte DiVincenzo, the team added depth to one of the weaker parts of its roster.
A big move didn’t come for the Knicks this offseason, but one could be on the horizon.
If the Philadelphia 76ers aren’t able to make lemonade out of lemons with this Harden situation, it would not be that surprising if Embiid is forced to reevaluate his future with the team. And his recent comments about winning an NBA Championship will likely begin to stoke the flames of potential trade speculation.
I’m not saying he would request or demand a trade at that point, but it has to at the very least be on the table as a possibility.
And if that does end up happening, the Knicks, who have been linked to Embiid in the past, would likely be at the front of the line.
Joel Embiid may be the superstar the New York Knicks are waiting to target
Embiid is the exact type of superstar that the Knicks have been building toward pursuing. He could very well be considered the final piece of the team’s championship puzzle. And if/when Embiid does hit the trade market, the Knicks are positioned perfectly to make a strong move for him.
The Knicks have seven first-round picks in the next three NBA Drafts. If New York wanted, they could make a compelling package centered around those picks and maybe one or two of their young promising players.
In theory, the Knicks should have enough to “outbid” nearly every other team that would be pursuing Embiid – with the Brooklyn Nets likely being closely behind. Nevertheless, this is a potential scenario that the front office has been preparing for in recent years. For the first time in a long time, it seems like the Knicks are in the perfect spot to land a star via trade.
The big question is whether it will end up being Embiid or another one. Depending on how the next few months turn out for the Sixers, there’s at least a non-zero chance that Embiid could end up on the trade block. And if that’s the case, the Knicks will be one of the favorites to land the MVP-caliber big man.
