NBA Trade Rumors: Knicks surprisingly not interested in move for Karl-Anthony Towns
NBA Trade Rumors: The New York Knicks would reportedly somewhat surprisingly have no interest in trading for Karl-Anthony Towns.
The New York Knicks are a franchise that has successfully changed the entire narrative in recent years. They’ve gone from being one of the laughingstocks in the league to a rising one. Coming off a playoff run in which they managed to advance to the conference semifinals for only the second time since 2000, the Knicks are in a great spot heading into next season.
In fact, you can make the argument that the Knicks are one or two big moves away from title contention in the Eastern Conference. They have the assets to do so but, at least right now, it’s about finding the right star target that would fit best with this team’s core that is already in place.
One star that reportedly could be on the move this offseason is Karl-Anthony Towns. However, the Knicks aren’t a team with much interest. It just goes to show how much this franchise has changed.
Instead of making a huge gamble on KAT, the Knicks are waiting for the right fit. But if a team like the Knicks isn’t interested in KAT, it makes you question whether the Minnesota Timberwolves will be able to move him at all this offseason (if that’s something they’re indeed exploring).
Are the Minnesota Timberwolves “stuck” with Karl-Anthony Towns?
It’s a bit silly to say or even suggest that the Wolves are “stuck” with KAT. On paper, he’s a player with a skill set that nearly every team in the league should want. However, there are understanding intangibles that complicate it all.
His effort and ability to improve as a player have been questioned recently. Adding to that, the fact that he’s due roughly $260 million over the next five seasons and it doesn’t make it any easier. Though, you’d have to think that there’s at least one team out there that would be willing to take a gamble on a 27-year-old that may not even have hit his ceiling yet.
In his defense, he hasn’t been put in the best situation to succeed in Minnesota. That doesn’t completely excuse his underwhelming presence on the team in recent years, but it clearly hasn’t helped him take his game to the next level.
If there is a team that is willing to take the gamble on KAT, they’d have to be all-in on his potential and their ability to get the most out of him. It’s understandable that a team like the Knicks, who have made similar high-risk mistakes in the past on players, would not be interested.
The question is, will any other team be?
