Fans debate who the best players and teams are. What about the coaches? I rank each NBA head coach going into the 2023-24 season from 30 all the way to 1.

The San Antonio Spurs recently announced that Gregg Popovich agreed to a new five-year contract to remain their head coach and president of basketball operations.  According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Popovich will earn over $80 million through the 2027-28 season.  That’s more than the six-year, $78.5 million contract that Monty Williams agreed to earlier this offseason with the Detroit Pistons.

Popovich is currently both the oldest and longest-tenured head coach in the league.  He’s won the most regular season games (1,310), ranks third in playoff wins (170), and has the fifth-highest overall winning percentage (.667) in the history of the association. “Pop” has led the Spurs to five NBA champions and is one of the greatest NBA head coaches of all time.

Does all that make him the best coach in the NBA today?

Ranking all 30 head coaches in the NBA

I decided to compose a power ranking list of the 30 current NBA head coaches.  Here are the criteria that I used to rank each coach, each with an equal value:

  1. NBA Head Coaching Resume
  2. X’s and O’s
  3. Leadership
  4. Adjustments – Do they make them and are their moves successful?
  5. Player Development

Let’s get to our NBA head-coaching power rankings.
