Enough about the ‘Nova boys – let’s talk about some Blue Devils this time.

In the lead-up to the 2022 NBA Draft, there were three names that popped up in debates over the number one pick: Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith, and Paolo Banchero. When the dust settled, it was Banchero who went first overall to Orlando. In his maiden voyage with the Magic, Banchero became the first No. 1 pick since Ben Simmons (2017-2018) to win Rookie of the Year.

With averages of 20 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, Banchero had a pretty solid argument for the award (the Magic’s win-loss record notwithstanding). In his sophomore season, the 6-10 forward from Duke is primed to make an even bigger impact on the floor. And it may very well be because of a certain chip on his shoulder – or rather, a medal that isn’t on his neck.

Like the rest of Team USA, Banchero is probably none too happy that their FIBA World Cup campaign ended in disappointing fashion. At no point in the tournament did he look particularly comfortable playing the 5-spot behind Jaren Jackson, Jr. When Banchero dons his familiar Magic jersey once more, expect him to relish his return to his home turf, flourish in his own style of play, and earn a spot on the All-Star team.
