NBA MVP Power Rankings: Joel Embiid steady on top; Giannis makes a move up
In the latest edition of our NBA MVP Power Rankings, Joel Embiid is stead on top while Giannis Antetokounmpo begins to make a move.
Roughly a quarter into the 2023-24 NBA season, this is the time where you can get a good sense of the stars that are going to be real participants that are going to factor in the NBA MVP race. At least for now, I believe there is a good list of 7-8 players that are going to define this race this season.
Before we get to the top 7, let's explore one honorable mention that couldn't be left off this list.
NBA MVP honorable mention: Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves
I don't think there would be much pushback with the narrative that Anthony Edwards deserves some consideration for the NBA MVP award based on how good the Minnesota Timberwolves have been to start the season. The Wolves are one of the hottest teams in the NBA and sit atop the league standings with a 15-4 record through the first quarter of the season.
It would be pretty outlandish if they didn't have any representation in the race for MVP with the best record in the league. Edwards is the player that's likely going to get the love. The fourth-year guard is averaging 26 points, six rebounds, and five assists on 47 percent shooting from the field and 38 percent shooting from 3-point range.
Edwards may not be putting up the gaudy numbers that some of the other players on this list are putting up, and that's probably the biggest reason he isn't ranked higher on this list, but he's still been huge for a team that is looking to make the jump to contention in the West.
