It’s unlikely for the Oklahoma City Thunder and Reggie Jackson to agree on a contract extension before tomorrow’s deadline

If the Oklahoma City Thunder want to lock up Reggie Jackson before he can hit the open market, the two sides are going to have to agree on a contract extension before the Oct. 31 deadline.

Right now though, that’s beginning to look very much unlikely. In other words, Jackson will likely become a restricted free agent next summer.

"[via Oklahoma City Thunder: Contract talks with Reggie Jackson likely to continue next summer – The Oklahoman]As the deadline nears, a deal appears unlikely to get done and talks will have to resume next summer when Jackson becomes a restricted free agent.Oklahoma City historically reaches agreements with players on rookie extensions. Jeff Green and James Harden are the two biggest exceptions. Both were traded before making it to restricted free agency. But in 2009, the Thunder and Thabo Sefolosha came to an 11th-hour agreement on an extension that kept him with the franchise through the end of last season. The case of Jackson, however, is closer to those of Green and Harden."

Oklahoma City Thunder history states that if an extension doesn’t get done with Jackson, there’s a really good possibility that he could find his way on the trade block soon.

That can’t be good news for Jackson’s camp.

Jackson eventually wants to be a starter in the NBA, he just hasn’t really been given the opportunity to prove that in OKC. He’s had moments of playing alongside Westbrook in the lineup last season, but it’s clear that he hasn’t proved enough to Thunder coach Scott Brooks. Apparently.

Then again, it did take Brooks one year too long to pull Kendrick Perkins out of his starting lineup.

Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti may have said that Jackson is a “core member” of this team. Although, the proof is kind of in the pudding if an extension doesn’t get done.

Jackson wants to be a starter in the league. It’s important to him. And if the Thunder can’t offer that, maybe it’s best for parties if they go their separate ways soon.

And that’s a decision that’s going to be have to be made sooner rather than later.
