The Los Angeles Lakers are in quite a difficult situation.
They’re trying to plan for the future, which could include “tanking” this season in an attempt to secure a top-5 spot in the NBA draft lottery, while trying to satisfy Kobe Bryant with a “competitive” roster to play alongside. Their situation isn’t ideal.
And at 6-16, with the way Kobe has been playing lately coupled with how bad the Eastern Conference is right now, it’s looking unlikely for the Lakers managing a top-5 pick in the 2015 NBA draft.
Because of that, the Lakers may as well comb through the trade market in an attempt to make the Lakers’ roster more fierce. That’s where the Nets come into play. With Brooklyn putting its trio of former all-stars of the NBA trade block, the Lakers may be one of few teams that could potentially have interest.
Although, the Lakers could find it extremely difficult to cut a deal. You know, with the lack of actual trade assets they have on hand this season. But, there’s still a chance that something could formulate between now and February.
"Q: Chad, does Brooklyn realistically have a chance to move any of their “big 3”? Lopez is a tough sell in a year with many emerging centers in college and his injury history. Nobody’s taking Johnson’s contract and Deron Williams looks gassed. Would it be more realistic to try and swap expiring deal of Garnett and maybe Plumlee for say, Nash/Ellington/Ed Davis from Lakers? Rearranging deckchairs maybe, but sometimes restructuring helps a company manage its assets more efficiently.I think it’s going to be a very, very tough sell. The two teams that are obvious choices are the Lakers and Knicks. But I can’t imagine the Knicks wanting to swap with their cross town rivals, and even if they did, sources say the Knicks aren’t going to do anything to damage their upcoming cap space next year unless they land an All-Star caliber talent. So they’re out. The Lakers could be motivated as the only way they even land a lottery pick is if they get a Top 5 pick. They are cutting it very close. The problem of course is that the Lakers don’t have much to offer the Nets outside of cap relief and Billy King isn’t trying to do what’s best for the organization, he’s trying to save his job. Waving the white flag just speeds up the firing process. No, the Nets painted themselves into an almost impossible corner. I don’t see any easy way out."
Don’t rule out the Lakers pulling off a trade soon. Especially after Kobe Bryant’s recent practice drama.
