Frank Kaminsky better be one hell of an NBA player.
Because if he isn’t, we’re going to look back at what transpired during the 2015 NBA Draft, when the Charlotte Hornets were on the clock at No. 9, as Michael Jordan’s biggest draft blunder ever.
Worst than when he drafted Kwame Brown. Yes, it’ll be that bad. Even moreso if Justise Winslow becomes the NBA player that many expect him to be.
According to ESPN‘s Chris Forsberg, the Boston Celtics made a ‘strong’ push with multiple teams in spots 4-9 on draft night to trade up in an effort to take Winslow, who was quickly falling down draft boards. Their final attempt was with the Hornets, who took Kaminsky.
Six picks, with the potential of four future first-round draft picks was reportedly Boston’s final offer to Charlotte. They believe Kaminsky is worth more.
"[via ESPN]The Celtics made a strong final push to multiple teams in spots 4-9 on draft day. It culminated with an all-in effort in attempt to get Charlotte to deliver the No. 9 pick with Boston lusting for Duke forward Justise Winslow (the same player it coveted while trying to shuffle higher).According to sources, the Celtics’ final offer to the Hornets was a package that could have featured as many as six draft picks, including four potential first-round selections (a combination of picks from this draft and in the future). But the Hornets could not be swayed and turned down multiple offers to select Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky.Meeting with reporters in the aftermath of the draft, Ainge hinted at his team’s dogged pursuit. “Maybe we were going too hard at it,” he said. “There was a time when I thought, ‘Woah, this is getting a little out of control.’ We’re putting a lot of eggs in one young player’s basket. So I’m not frustrated. In the long run, maybe it’ll be the best.”"
The Celtics were ALL-IN for Winslow, they just couldn’t get the Hornets in on the potential deal. And probably that has more to do with the fact that Kaminsky was probably not going to be available at 16, when the Celtics were drafting. Charlotte wanted to make sure they got their hands on Kaminsky, for some reason.
Still, this has to be one of the biggest blunders in NBA history. I still struggle to find a scenario in which we won’t look back, objectively, and say the Hornets made a huge mistake.
Faminsky might end up being a nice player in the NBA, but there’s no way he’s ever going to be worth what the Hornets were being offered on draft night.
