Ty Lawson might’ve been arrested (DUI) for the second time in a six-month period, but that reportedly hasn’t slowed down the trade interest for the talented 27-year-old point guard.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit Pistons are among the teams that have shown interest in potentially acquiring Lawson via trade. Their interest is so much so, that the Nuggets feel optimistic that they could unload Lawson’s baggage — and contract — before the 2015-16 NBA training camp.
One dark horse name to keep an eye on is reportedly the Sacramento Kings, who could eventually jump into the Lawson sweepstakes at any point.
"[via SI.com]Despite a second DUI arrest in the last six months, embattled Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson is generating interest on the trade market, NBA sources told SI.com. Houston, Detroit and the L.A. Lakers are among the teams that have expressed interest in Lawson recently, and there remains a strong possibility the Nuggets could unload Lawson before training camp.…One team that could work its way into the mix for Lawson: Sacramento. The Kings are coached by ex-Nuggets coach George Karl, who despite the recent signing of Rajon Rondo would welcome a reunion with his former player, per a league source."
I’m not sure what either of these teams that are reportedly interested in Lawson would be willing to give up. Mostly because they each are set, or appear to be, at the point guard position. The Rockets have Patrick Beverley — or maybe he would be part of such hypothetical deal — the Pistons have Reggie Jackson and Brandon Jennings — though Jennings is coming of a torn achilles — and the Lakers have Jordan Clarkson and D’Angelo Russell — two players that have shown the ability to play the point guard position.
My guess is that if there is such a market for Lawson, the Nuggets would be trying to get a point guard back in exchange for their 27-year-old troubled one.
The Lakers won’t be willing to swap Clarkson or Russell, I wouldn’t think, so my assumption would be is that their offer would be low. Them landing Lawson would be a long shot at this point.
The Rockets MIGHT be willing to deal Beverley, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d be in any hypothetical trade offers. They might have a chance at getting a deal done.
The Pistons would love to unload Jennings’ expiring contract, though I’m now so sure the Nuggets would be willing to deal for a point guard coming off such an injury.
Sacramento really is a wildcard in this scenario. I wouldn’t put it past them to try and trade Darren Collison, perhaps even a pick, for Lawson. Even though I’m not sure that would be enough, it’s quite an interesting scenario.
Either way, the Nuggets have to be sitting quite content at the moment. The bottom line is that there appears to be a market for Ty Lawson. That alone should have the Nuggets jumping for joy.
And if they happen to snag at the very least some NBA talent for Lawson, that should be viewed as a huge win for Denver.
