The Golden State Warriors might’ve managed to keep Draymond Green this summer, fresh off winning its first NBA Championship since 1975, but not being able to retain all its players comes with the territory.
They managed to sidestep that cruel reality this summer, mostly because Green was a restricted free agent, but odds point to the Warriors having to pay the price of a perennial championship contender sooner or later.
And that could come next summer, when both Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli hit the free agency market. Both Barnes and Ezeli are in line to become restricted free agents, but could warrant big money from competing teams. Especially with the expected rise in salary cap next summer.
There’s going to be a lot of dumb and stupid money flying around next summer, and some of that will likely find its way to both Barnes and Ezeli – not saying that they don’t deserve such money, it’s just the matter of the fact. Players get overpaid in free agency, no ifs, ands or buts about it.
With that understood, Warriors GM Bob Myers is still optimistic that the team will be able to extend both.
"[via Bay Area News Group]Bob Myers to KNBR on extensions for Harrison Barnes & Festus Ezeli: “We’re focused and motivated. Hopefully we can get something done.”Bob Myers to KNBR “If Harrison was shooting the ball 20 times/game I’d love to see what thatd look like. I think it could look pretty good.”Bob Myers to KNBR: “Unfortunately or maybe fortunately for us, that’s not what we need. But for (Harrison Barnes), he’s got a high ceiling.”"
Of course, this is Myers being awfully optimistic. Considering that the Warriors will need to sign Stpehen Curry to a significantly bigger extension than the one he signed a few years ago after the 2016-17 season, there’s reason to believe that they won’t be able to bring everyone back after next season, and one of those casualties could be Barnes or Ezeli.

Though, with Andrew Bogut nearing the end of his NBA career – there were even rumblings that he could retire after this past season – the Warriors need some insurance at the center position, and Ezeli helped supply that at times last year.
Ezeli would also be cheaper than Barnes, which sets him up for potentially being the Warriors’ first casualty.
