NBA All-Star Break Roundtable: Surprises, Predictions And Trades
The Biggest Surprise Of The First Half Of The Season…
Saenz: The Washington Wizards are really good. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by their play recently. I could see them make an Eastern Conference Finals run.
Morton: Isaiah Thomas. I didn’t expect him to score this much and be as consistent as he is.
Polazzon: Miami’s winning streak. This came out of nowhere – Miami were 11-30 before they ripped off an incredible 13 game win streak, putting them back in the race for the playoffs. Without any superstars and a heavy amount of D-League alumni (led by Hassan Whiteside), the HEAT broke the record for the longest winning streak by a team under .500.
To add to the surprise, Goran Dragic turned back the clock to 2013-14 and Dion Waiters played the best ball of his life during the streak. If the 11-30 Miami HEAT going on the longest winning streak of any team this season isn’t surprising, I don’t know what is.
McFee: IT’s 4th quarter wizardry. I’m a Celtics fan, but if you had told me a 5’9″ guard would be averaging the most 4th-quarter PPG in 20 years and set to crush Kobe’s current record of 9.6 with an absurd 10.8 average I probably would have laughed in your face. Yet, he continues to do most of his damage in crunch time. He might just help hang another banner in the rafters by the time his career is over. We are all witnesses.
Gonzalez: Easily the Rockets. We knew Harden would be an MVP candidate, but no one saw Houston to be on pace to win 60 games. They are currently the third seed in the West and only about three games behind the Spurs. That is insane when you look at their roster.
