NBA: 4 contenders who can catch up with the Golden State Warriors
San Antonio Spurs
As long as Kawhi Leonard is healthy and on the team, the Spurs will be a contender. Every year, Leonard is in contention for the Defensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards. That’s what you want out of your star player is greatness on both ends of the court.
We didn’t get to see what a healthy Spurs team could do against this new Warriors team in the playoffs, since Kawhi got hurt in the first game and Tony Parker was already hurt and out for the playoffs before the series. But what can they do this offseason to beat the Warriors?
Well adding Chris Paul would be a good start. Paul has been rumored to be interested in joining the Spurs for next season. Maybe he’s coming to the realization that he can’t beat the Warriors with the Clippers. If he wants to go deep in the playoffs and win a championship (which he’s never done before), then joining the Spurs is what’s best for him.
And also for the Spurs, as Tony Parker is getting older and not the player he once was, adding Chris Paul adds a great ball handler and superstar who can take some of the load off of Kawhi Leonard. Maybe the Spurs could add some good shooting outside of that.
For example, they could steal Kyle Korver from the Cavs as he will be an unrestricted free agent. Adding Chris Paul and Kyle Korver would increase their chances of beating the Warriors significantly and possibly get them another championship. Also, anything is possible with Gregg Popovich as your head coach.
