What’s next after missing out big during the summer of 2019?

A few months ago, the New York Knicks believed they’d be sitting as true contenders heading into the 2019-20 season after a successful offseason. However, almost the opposite unfolded over the last few weeks. The Knicks didn’t win the NBA Draft Lottery – and fell to the third spot – and they didn’t land Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving in free agency. And they didn’t sign any of their third options either, with Kemba Walker signing with the Celtics and Kawhi Leonard inking with the Clippers.

The offseason was an utter disaster for the Knicks, and are left with RJ Barrett. Which isn’t a terrible consolation prize, but is nowhere near the team the Knicks believed they’d be heading into training camp with just a couple months ago.

The biggest question for the Knicks is, what now? Is the plan to try and actually develop this young core that they’ve assembled over the last few seasons? Or are they content with trying to swing big in free agency again in a couple of seasons? Giannis is a free agent in 2021. If the Knicks wanted to put all their eggs in one basket, that would be the summer to do this all over again.
