Detroit Pistons
Has this team reached its ceiling?
The Detroit Pistons had somewhat of a surprising season as they managed to sneak into the playoffs with not many expecting them to do so. However, I’m not sure how smart that was considering they have one of the best frontcourts in the NBA, in Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond. Nevertheless, they weren’t a shoo-in for the playoffs last year and made it despite battling injuries down the stretch.
The big question for the Pistons heading into 2019-20, though, is whether or not this team had reached its ceiling – a bottom four playoff spot. Blake is going to be really good, but unless this team gets some significant help from the backcourt I’m not sure how much this team can improve heading into this season.
The Pistons won 41 games last season and fell at the hands of the Bucks in the first round of the playoffs. Quite frankly, with the way this roster is currently constructed, that might be their ceiling – save for a career year out of Reggie Jackson, or an unforeseen breakout rookie season from Sekou Doumbouya.
Detroit is kind of stuck in the middle at the moment, which explains why they were somewhat interested in trading for Russell Westbrook. However, something has to give. The Pistons can’t just live in mediocrity forever.
