Houston Rockets eyeing Tyler Johnson to round out playoff roster

With the NBA set to resume the 2019-20 season next month in Orlando, it’s expected for more than a few teams to explore the transaction wire in an attempt to round out its roster heading into the playoffs. One of the teams that is expected to be at least somewhat active is the Houston Rockets.

The transaction window is set to open June 23, according to Shams Charania, and it will allow teams like the Rockets to finalize their roster heading into the Orlando bubble. According to a recent report, one player that Houston is expected to show interest in is Tyler Johnson.

"The Rockets in preparation for next month’s restart of the NBA season are looking at several options for a roster move including signing free-agent guard Tyler Johnson, a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking said Friday."

The Suns waived Johnson in February after a somewhat considering first half of the season. In 31 games played for Phoenix this season, Johnson was averaging just six points per game on 38 percent shooting from the field and 29 percent shooting from 3-point range.

It’s not surprising that Daryl Morey and the Rockets will be looking to add depth to the roster heading into the playoffs. This is a team that was not yet finalized (roster-wise) even after the NBA Trade Deadline.

For a team that made the pivot to an almost exclusively small-ball lineup, Johnson would be an interesting addition for the Suns. Even though he struggled extensively this past season with his shot in Phoenix, Johnson is an athletic enough of a guard to perhaps play a bit bigger than the shooting or combo guard position that he’s used to.

He may not fit the void left at the center position for the team, but he’s a veteran guard that could be plugged in at any guard position and play a role. Who knows if he can refine his jumper, but Johnson is a solid rotation player in today’s NBA when he’s healthy and playing up to his capabilities.
