The reach: Obi Toppin, F, Dayton

I really like Obi Toppin as a draft prospect. In fact, I believe that he could be one of the better players during his rookie season initially. However, with as much talent that is still on the board at No. 2, I wouldn’t love the Golden State Warriors drafting Toppin here. If the Warriors love him as a prospect and fit with their team, perhaps they could trade down and still grab him.

At No. 2, the Warriors should be gunning for production and potential. They have the luxury of drafting second and that’s not something that is gifted all too often. Picking a player with a high ceiling should be a priority. That’s why Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, and James Wiseman would all be good selections at No. 2.

On paper, there’s plenty to like about Toppin. He’s one of the best finishers in this draft class and is extremely athletic. During his sophomore season with Dayton, Toppin averaged 20 points and eight rebounds on 63 percent shooting from the field and 39 percent shooting from 3-point range. He’s a good player, but not one that should be taken with the second overall pick.
