19. Brooklyn Nets – Jalen Smith, C, Maryland
Selection and commentary: Matt Modderno
Jalen Smith has been one of the biggest risers in recent mock drafts. Originally tapped as a late first-round pick, he is now generating lottery buzz. Based on that, the Nets could see him as the best player still available at this point.
The fit also makes a lot of sense too. Smith is more ready to come in and contribute than many of the prospects going in this range. With Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving returning, Brooklyn will be looking for players to help them make a run next season. And with Caris LeVert and Spencer Dinwiddie expecting big minutes, a guard seems like a less likely position for them to select.
The Nets are in decent shape as far as big men are concerned but Smith would give them an added dimension. Neither Jarrett Allen nor DeAndre Jordan is particularly prolific from the perimeter and Smith made great strides as a three-point shooter this year. He has good mechanics and that should help his shot translate to the NBA line. Smith also sets good screens and could help his teammates get open looks too.
Smith is pretty big, hits 3’s, blocks shots, runs the floor, and finishes well around the basket. What’s not to love? Well, there are questions about his strength, particularly in his lower body, which would make it hard for him to hold position around the basket. He also may not have enough lateral quickness to switch onto quicker players. But overall, there’s a lot more to like than there are question marks.
