Robert Woodard, forward
The Sacramento Kings know something about Robert Woodard that we do not. After falling to the second round, the Kings traded down to acquire him with the 40th pick. This in itself is not unusual, but to immediately offer a four-year contract is rare, especially for a second-rounder.
Woodward is your prototypical wing, standing at 6-foot-7 with an insane 7-foot-1 wingspan. He is a solid shooter and versatile on defense, comfortable guarding multiple positions. Athletically he can compete with the best and that might be why the Kings are all in on him. Sacramento has had a small forward drought these last few years, with Harrison Barnes the only legitimate wing in the Golden 1 Center.
Finally, they have added some depth to what is often one of the most important matchups on the court.
Whatever the case may be, Woodard has to show exactly why he deserves this contract. He needs to prove he is capable of keeping up with Barnes, as well as shooting efficiently from behind the arc.
Going to your first training camp as a rookie is challenging enough, but Woodard will definitely have that added pressure. If he holds his own against the likes of Jabari Parker and Glenn Robinson III who too are vying for minutes, then I see no reason he can’t secure minutes his rookie year.
