Why the Toronto Raptors shouldn’t trade for Drummond: It could hurt the cap sheet
Secondly, even though acquiring Drummond wouldn’t likely cost a significant huge asset. In fact, you can make the case that it would be fairly cheap, trading for a player that is about to become a free agent almost always results in that team re-signing said player to a long-contract during the offseason.
On the open market, Drummond is going to be costly and will likely cut into the team’s cap space heading into the 2021 offseason. I’m not sure if that’s the smartest thing for a team to do, especially if they plan to pivot and begin to build around Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet.
In a nightmare scenario, the Raptors could be stuck with a big three of Siakam, VanVleet, and Drummond heading into the 2021-22 season. That’s not something that Toronto wants to see (I’m sure).
Toronto needs to be very careful with targeting a player such as Drummond, whose position is quickly dwindling by the second in the NBA
