NBA seller candidate: San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have been another team this season that has defined expectations and find themselves as a top-five team in the Western Conference heading into the NBA All-Star break.

DeMar DeRozan has been a lifesaver for the Spurs and the leader that they’ve needed this season. It’s a great story and one of redemption for both the Spurs and the DeRozan. That said, it might be in the best interest of both parties for them to move on ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline.

DeRozan is in an expiring contract after this season and it’s unlikely that he’ll be back in a San Antonio Spurs uniform next season. Unless the Spurs are willing to give him a max contract. That’s not happening.

While making the playoffs might sound intriguing for a team such as San Antonio, they should be looking at the bigger picture and should be trying to get something in return for DeRozan while they can.

San Antonio has a solid young core and should be looking to build upon that with added assets at the trade deadline. Even though it might cost them a spot in the playoffs this season, being sellers at the NBA trade deadline this year would help this team immensely down the line.
