NBA Rumors: C’s Williams, Knicks’ Reddish not expected to get extensions
NBA Rumors: Two young promising players that are not expected to receive contract extensions before the deadline are Cam Reddish and Grant Williams.
The deadline for teams to sign eligible players to rookie-scale extensions is October 17. For many young players, that means the 2022-23 NBA season could end up being their final season with their current teams. And while we’ve already seen a few eligible players already sign extensions, there are still many that remain unresolved.
Two of the more interesting names are versatile Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams and New York Knicks wing Cam Reddish. For different reasons, Williams and Reddish are two players that could many teams could be intrigued at signing in the restricted market.
However, according to a recent report, there’s no expectation that either Williams (with the Celtics) or Reddish (with the Knicks) will be signed to extensions before next week’s deadline.
It’s been two different paths for Williams and Reddish
Through the first few years of their respective careers, it’s been two different paths for Williams and Reddish. For Williams, he’s been a bright spot for the Celtics. His versatility in the frontcourt has been a huge asset for Boston over the last couple of seasons, and we saw that on display throughout their run to the NBA Finals last season.
On the surface, you would assume that he’s not a player the Celtics would want to lose but their cap situation could put them in a difficult situation. Especially if Williams has another superb season.
You can probably say the opposite about Reddish, who has struggled to find his footing in the NBA through the first few seasons of his career. After starting his career with the Atlanta Hawks, he was traded to the New York Knicks at last year’s NBA Trade Deadline.
Though, I’m not sure you can firmly say that he’s found a new home in New York.
As their respective situations remain unresolved, that means both Williams and Reddish could very well hit the restricted free-agent market next summer. If that ends up being the case, that will make for possibly difficult situations for them with the Celtics and Knicks. And their play this season will absolutely dictate that.
