NBA Trade Rumors: After acquiring Kyrie Irving, are the Dallas Mavericks more or less likely to trade Christian Wood at the deadline?

Just a few days before the NBA Trade Deadline, the Dallas Mavericks managed to steal all the headlines by acquiring Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. The Mavs made the big splash to acquire Kyrie and will now attempt to make a move up the West standings during the second half of the season.

The question is, are the Mavs done heading into this week’s NBA Trade Deadline?

According to a recent report, Christian Wood has been a frequently discussed trade candidate for the Mavs. Whether or not they end up moving forward with trading him remains to be seen. However, you can’t help but wonder if the recent acquisition of Kyrie will make a Wood trade more or less likely.

On one hand, Wood gives the Mavs another element and another productive player that could help this team make a deeper run in the postseason. At the same time, he’s also a free agent during the offseason and I’m not sure he’s part of the team’s long-term plans. Especially considering that the Mavs will likely have to pay Kyrie a big-money deal after this season.

Are the Mavs really going to pay Kyrie AND Wood big-money deals? I find that unlikely. That could open the door to trade Wood, who is likely going to command a big contract in free agency.

Does the Dallas Mavericks have another move up their sleeve?

Heading into the trade deadline, it will be interesting to see if the Mavs do intend on making another move. Ideally, the hope would be for the Mavs to continue to add small pieces around their core to ensure a deep playoff run.

Now with two superstars on the roster, winning the championship should be on the table for the Mavs. If Kyrie can stick to basketball, there’s no reason to believe that this team isn’t talented enough to win it all. Especially with how special Luka Doncic has been this season. The next few days should be interesting in Dallas.

It’s time to normalize the Mavs being a legit contender. I know Kyrie is a polarizing player but he automatically makes the Mavs a contender. With Kyrie as your second-best player next to Luka, the sky is the limit. But there are still questions that remain for this team heading into the trade deadline.
