The definitive list of six NBA teams that can win the 2023 championship.
With the 2023 NBA Playoffs just around the corner, this is a great time to take a step back and really analyze how many teams can actually win the NBA Championship this season. Thankfully, I have a wonderful formula that is 1-0 in predicting champions.
My formula worked great last season as I predicted the Golden State Warriors as one of the teams that could win the NBA Championship. And then did. In an attempt to keep this exercise going, I thought I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t keep this experiment going. So, let’s get to what my formula churns out this season.
But before we get to the results, I did make some adjustments to the formula. I will also predict which team I believe, based on the highest score on my formula scale, will win the championship. This season, we’re not just going to look at teams with two superstars on their roster that also have top-10 offenses and defenses. I want to hone it a bit further.
The adjusted NBA Championship formula
My adjustment to the formula is if a team has two stars – not just superstars – and both a top 10 offense and defense, they’re in. Two stars and a great offense and defense mean the team has the capability to win a championship this season.
Additionally, if a team has two superstars and a top 10 defense or top 10 net rating, they will also get the nod as a team that can win the championship.
To simplify everything, here is the updated formula to qualify as a team (in my opinion) that can win the championship this season:
- Two stars and a top-10 offense AND defense
- Two superstars and a top-10 net rating or top-5 defense
- Top 5 offense and defense, top 5 record in the NBA
