12. Orlando Magic (via Chicago Bulls) – Cam Whitmore, G, Villanova

After missing on a playmaking guard earlier in the NBA Draft, I have the Orlando Magic doubling down in the backcourt with a player that could develop as a primary playmaker (potentially) for the team down the line. Cam Whitmore had a hot and cold freshman season at Villanova. And the team’s lack of success couldn’t have helped. In the end, he still averaged a solid 13 points and five rebounds per game on 48 percent shooting from the field.

What’s concerning about Whitmore’s freshman season was the fact that he averaged less than one assist per game. It’s odd considering there were times when he flashed the potential of being a great playmaker. He just didn’t do that enough at Villanova, for whatever reason. In college, he was more of a score-first option.

It’s unfair to expect that from Whitmore when he makes the jump to the NBA and maybe with more talent around him, he could really polish up his passing and decision-making.

The Magic really need to find a primary playmaker in the backcourt. Perhaps Whitmore can develop into that role for the team.
