NBA Trade Rumors: The Dallas Mavericks, if they retain their pick, could be looking to trade their projected top 10 NBA draft pick.
After an extremely disappointing stretch of basektball to close the season, the Dallas Mavericks have officially missed the NBA Playoffs and will be heading into the offseason will many questions to answer regarding their future. One of the biggest revolves around how this team intends on entering next year and what they plan on doing this summer to improve their overall chances in the Western Conference.
It’s quite unacceptable for a team to miss the playoffs a year after making a run to the conference finals. It’s not something that the Mavs should be proud of and, in fact, should be quite concerning considering they acquired Kyrie Irving at the NBA Trade Deadline.
When the Mavs acquired Kyrie, they were fourth in the Western Conference standings. The fact that they finished outside the top 10 is somewhat of a forgettable riddle. And with rumors already running rampant, this is a team that will have to find a way to improve the roster in a significant way during the summer.
And one way they could do that is by trading their projected top 10 NBA Draft pick which, according to a recent report (subscription required), is on the table for the team this offseason.
The Dallas Mavericks need to be aggressive this offseason
It’s tough to imagine what exactly the Mavs end up doing this offseason but the expectation is that they’re going to try to re-sign Kyrie Irving. After that, everything else may be on the table. And considering the unpredictability of Kyrie, it would be smart for the team to have other potential options.
Plus, there’s no guarantee that re-signing Kyrie alone is an offseason plan that will result in the Mavs improving and moving up in the Western Conference standings next year.
If there’s one area that the Mavs need to try to improve is on the defense side of the floor. The Mavs were one of the worst defensive teams in the league this past season and it played a big part in the team’s demise during the second half of the season.
And perhaps that was the real reason why the Mavs decided to “tank” the final couple of games of the regular season. Considering where this team was by the time the final week of the season arrived, it’s not that surprising.
The Mavs need to reshuffle this roster and retaining their projected top 10 pick was going to give this team another additional asset that they could use during the offseason. Now we wait and see how they could possibly utilize it.
