NBA Rumors: Contrary to recent public opinion, the Golden State Warriors want to retain Draymond Green this offseason.

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Golden State Warriors. And no matter what happens in the remainder of the playoffs, this is a team that has some big questions to answer during the summer. And at the center of many of those questions is Draymond Green.

If he wants, Draymond can opt-out o the final year of his contract with the Warriors and can test free agency. And with the inconsistent season that the Warriors have had, there was a sense that this could be the end for Draymond in Golden State. He has even voiced some of that belief.

Though, that may not be entirely right.

According to a recent report, the Warriors want to figure out a way to retain Draymond this offseason. Though, that could be easier said than done considering how the team’s cap sheet looks at the moment.

Draymond has had somewhat of a bounce back season in which he’s averaging nine points and seven rebounds on 53 percent shooting from the field while also still being the anchor for the team’s defense.

The Golden State Warriors have some salary cap gymnastics to figure out this offseason

Draymond has a player option for next season but you’d have to imagine that he’s going to want to ink a fresh long-term deal this summer. And he may not be the only Warrior that’s going to be seeking a fat new extension. Klay Thompson could be another player that will be seeking an extension considering he’s an expiring contract after the 2023-24 season.

The Warriors will have their hands full this offseason considering they just signed Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, and Stephen Curry to rich, long-term deals recently.

It’s not impossible for the Warriors to figure out how to retain Draymond along with the rest of this team’s core. However, it may involve a few trades and possibly moving on from one of Wiggins or Poole in an attempt to lessen the team’s tax bill.

Nevertheless, the bottom line is the Warriors want to keep the band together. Or so it seems. Heading into the offseason, it’ll be interesting to see if they can actually get it done. And re-signing Draymond will be the true test for the Warriors. Can they get it done?
