NBA Trade Rumors: In an attempt to upgrade the point guard position, the Los Angeles Lakers could consider pursuing Trae Young.
Even though no one expected the Los Angeles Lakers to make a run to the Western Conference Finals, the season did end somewhat disappointing for LeBron James and company. Being swept by the Denver Nuggets will leave a bad taste in the Lakers’ mouths heading into the offseason. And perhaps most importantly, it will likely foster in some change to the team’s roster.
The big question for the Lakers entering the offseason is how that change will look. For the moment, the Lakers only have five players that have guaranteed salaries for next season. As a bit of an understatement, the Lakers have plenty of work to do and roster-shuffling to figure out.
Short of the Lakers simply re-signing everyone, which at this point seems unlikely, this could end up being a chaotic offseason in Los Angeles. Add in the fact that LeBron is flirting with the idea of retiring, nothing appears to be clear-cut or set in stone for the Lakers at the moment.
That could open the door for outside opportunities for the Lakers, including the pursuit of another star. And according to a recent report, Trae Young could emerge as one of those stars that the Lakers end up pursuing this offseason.
Trae Young has become a polarizing player for the Atlanta Hawks
In a vacuum, Young is one of the best players in the NBA. At the point guard position, he’s one of the most dynamic offensive players. However, because of the Atlanta Hawks’ recent struggles, their entire build may be in jeopardy this offseason. And there have been whispers that perhaps the Hawks would be open to the possibility of trading Young.
Whether or not that actually leads to a possible Young open market this offseason remains to be seen. But if that does end up transpiring this summer, perhaps the Lakers would be one of the teams interested. Even more so after the team benched D’Angelo Russell in the Western Conference Finals.
Objectively, a potential trio of Young, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis would be quite interesting. It’s difficult to see how the Lakers could make it happen, but it would certainly be a championship favorite in the Western Conference.
