Jaylen Brown’s future with the Boston Celtics will be defined by what happens in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics are on the verge of making NBA history. With a win in Game 7 against the Miami Heat, the Celtics could be the first team to come back from 0-3 down to win an NBA playoff series (0-151). This game will obviously have a huge impact on the whole of the Boston Celtics roster, regardless of the outcome.
But the Celtic player who it might affect the most is Jaylen Brown.
The rumors surrounding Jaylen Brown
Over the last year there’s been plenty of rumors surrounding Jaylen Brown’s potential contract extension will the Celtics. The C’s didn’t exactly do their best to mitigate these rumblings when they reportedly were open to the idea of trading him for Kevin Durant last summer.
This summer, Jaylen Brown (JB) is eligible for a five-year $295 million supermax extension from Boston. He is also a free agent in 2024. But there isn’t complete optimism he’ll accept a contract extension, or if the Celtics will even offer him the full supermax.
That’s why Game 7 looks to be hugely important.
What happens to Jaylen Brown if the Boston Celtics lose?
If the Celtics lose against the Heat in Game 7, I see very little possibility that Brown stays in Beantown. Jaylen has already had his issues with the organization and fanbase, and although a 4-3 loss considering the circumstances would be somewhat impressive, it’s clearly not where he and Boston want to be.
A loss looks to be a result that would have Brown request a trade this summer.
What happens to Jaylen Brown if the Boston Celtics win?
If the Celtics pull off what’s never been done before, and beat the Miami Heat in 7, I think Jaylen Brown will stay. Barring some horrible performance by the C’s in the NBA Finals (which if they overcome this deficit would, seem unlikely) Brown will remain in Boston.
Tatum and Brown have struck up a healthy young duo that would do great things in the future (regardless of if they would win these finals or not), so if they can get past the Heat, I think it will strengthen their bond even more.
But if they can’t find their way past Miami in Game 7, I’m afraid Jaylen Brown might be out the door.
