NBA Trade Rumors: A 3-team Deandre Ayton trade that would shake up league
The Atlanta Hawks add Myles Turner
The Atlanta Hawks bring in Myles Turner, who they feasibly could move to power forward while transitioning Onyeka Okongwu into the starting role at the 5. As the Hawks potentially look to remake their frontcourt this offseason, they could elect to move Capela in one trade to open up the door for Okongwu to start and then potentially bring in a new starting 4 if they swing a trade for John Collins elsewhere.
If the Hawks do elect to move Collins and Capela, this trade makes a lot of sense. Okongwu averaged 9.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game this year off the bench for the Hawks (while shooting 63.8% from the field) and seems ready to step into a starting role heading into the final year of his rookie deal.
With Okongwu extension eligible this offseason, the Hawks might feel pressure to move Capela in order to give Okongwu the starting spot. This trade would also bring in an experienced big man to pair with the still-young Okongwu.
While it would be a bit of an experiment and risk for the Hawks to make this trade and attempt to move Turner to the 4, I think it could work. Defensively, Turner and Okongwu would form a strong rim-protecting tandem and both players have shown enough athleticism for me to think that it could work with one of them having to guard away from the basket. Think something along the lines of the way Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen work together in Cleveland.
Offensively, Turner has shown the ability to work away from the basket. He shoots the 3-ball well (37.3% on four attempts per game this past season), and he has a history working alongside another big man in Domantas Sabonis. I think the Hawks need to try something different as they try to compete with Trae Young and Dejounte Murray at their backcourt helm, and I think this trade works as that.
