17. Los Angeles Lakers – Dereck Lively II, C, Duke

There are some that believe Dereck Lively II could be taken in the lottery. While I do believe his stock is rising heading into draft week, I’m not sure I believe it’s that high at the moment. I believe some of that smoke will clear out and he’ll be taken in the 15-22 range, which is fair.

If – and that’s a big “if” – Lively can continue to prove that he can stretch the defense with a consistent 3-point sump shot, there’s no question that he’s going to be taken higher than No. 17. But at this point, it’s just one big gamble. The Los Angeles Lakers could take a flier on him as a team with a need at the center position.

18. Washington Wizards (via Miami Heat)* – Nick Smith Jr, G, Arkansas

(*predicted trade)

As one of the most high-touted prospects coming out of high school, Nick Smith Jr. struggled mightily during his freshman season at Arkansas. Between injuries and not finding his groove with the team, it probably cost him a spot in the lottery. Still, it’s hard to believe that he will fall this far down the board on NBA Draft night.

If any team believes in his talent, they should absolutely take him higher. But falling to the Washington Wizards could work out for both sides. Smith is a dynamic offensive player that is still developing. In Washington, he’d have the time and opportunity to continue to hone his skills.
