A complicated 3-team trade

As you would expect, the Miami Heat needs to get creative to get off of Tyler Herro’s contract. And in this deal, the Heat and Atlanta Hawks (of all teams) would help each other out to move on from bad contracts. The San Antonio Spurs would help both teams out and get their own reward for doing so as well.

The Heat would trade Herro, Victor Oladipo, and a 2027 protected first-round pick to the Spurs. The Hawks would send John Collins to the Heat (who have a need at the power forward position) and a 2024 first-round pick (via Sacramento) to the Spurs. San Antonio would send Devonte’ Graham to the Heat and Doug McDermott and two second-round picks (via Los Angeles and Chicago) to the Hawks.

For this to all work, the Spurs have to be willing to pair Herro with Victor Wembanyama. And perhaps with two first-round picks, they’d be willing to do so. Especially considering they were at least somewhat involved in trade talks for Poole with the Golden State Warriors before he was eventually traded to the Washington Wizards. So it wouldn’t be that outlandish of a possibility.

The Hawks’ goal of this deal is to get out for Collins’ deal to help with luxury tax purposes. Miami moves Herro and takes a flier on Collins.
