The San Antonio Spurs have to be on cloud 9 after landing Victor Wembanyama in the 2023 NBA Draft. But now the true work begins for a team that will now be tasked with building out a contender around him. And that could prove to be easier said than done. And one decision that the Spurs will need to make this offseason revolves around whether to bring back Tre Jones, who is eligible to test the restricted free agency waters.

Even though Jones may not be considered a long-term answer at the point guard position for the Spurs, it would be outlandish to say that he hasn’t shown enough to warrant a second contract with the club. And that is generally the fate for most teams that have players entering restricted free agency. And I believe that will also be the case for Jones and the Spurs.

There are rumors that the Spurs could pursue a veteran point guard in free agency or via trade. Even if that ends up happening, there is value for the team in re-signing Jones. Despite his limitations as an undersized guard, he is coming off the best statistical season of his career in which he averaged 13 points and seven assists on 46 percent shooting from the field.
