The Houston Rockets will overpay for a “name”

For some odd reason, one team that is expected to be highly active early on in free agency is the Houston Rockets. They’ve been linked to almost every difference-making free agent expected to test the open market and you’d have to imagine that with as much money as the Rockets have to spend that they’re going to sign someone. I predict that the Rockets are not only going to land a difference-making free agent but that they’ll end up overpaying for one.

And there are many possible candidates for the Rockets to overpay for. Among the names that Houston has been linked to are Dillon Brooks, Kyle Kuzma, Draymond Green, James Harden, and Fred VanVleet. It would not be all that surprising if the Rockets ended up overpaying for either of those big-name free agents.

It’s understandable that the Rockets want to expedite their rebuilding process. However, there’s a fine line between trying to take a step forward vs. forcing the issue. You can’t help but wonder if making a play for a difference-maker is trying to take a step forward or if it’s forcing the issue.

The Rockets are going down this path. It remains to be seen if it will end up paying off.
