4. Grant Williams, restricted
After making the big move for Kristaps Porzingis, it would be surprising for the Boston Celtics to retain Grant Williams. Even as a restricted free agent, the overwhelming belief is that Williams is going to move on from the Celtics. And that may end up being the better move for him as even when he was playing a big part for the Celtics, he was just a mere supporting character to the team’s bigger names.
Maybe in the right situation, Williams could play a much larger role for a team. That remains to be seen. Williams is a player whose market will likely develop in the second wave of free agency. Even then, the Celtics will have some time to decide whether they want to match any offer sheet that Williams signs or if they’re willing to let him walk. Taking it a step further, they could even work to sign and trade him.
It’s easy to see why there would be a market for Williams. Even though he’s a bit undersized and may not be the best athlete, he’s a great defender and a good 3-point shooter. If nothing else, he offers value as a 3-and-D wing.
