NBA Rumors: The Dallas Mavericks could end their offseason moves by targeting the offensive-minded Kelly Oubre Jr. in free agency.

The Dallas Mavericks entered the offseason with plenty of pressure on their collective shoulders. Not only did they need to maneuver through re-signing Kyrie Irving but they also needed to also tangibly improve the supporting cast around Luka Doncic. Considering the limited flexibility that the Mavs had heading into the summer, I believe they did fairly well.

Dallas managed to re-sign Kyrie without it being much of a distraction and also added a few key pieces to their supporting cast in Dereck Lively II, Grant Williams, and Seth Curry. They also took a flier on Dante Exum, who is trying to make an NBA comeback.

It’s tough to sit here and say that the Mavs aren’t an improved team from last season. And they may not even be done making tweaks to the roster. One other free agent that has been linked to the Mavs is Kelly Oubre Jr.

He’s surprisingly still a free agent and at this point, it’s looking more and more like he’s going to have to take a minimum deal and try to catapult that to a big payday next offseason. If that is indeed the case, the interest would make even more sense for the Mavs.

Oubre Jr. is coming off a season in which he averaged 20 points and five rebounds on 43 percent shooting from the field.

Oubre Jr. would be a solid end to the Dallas Mavericks’ offseason

Even after adding Williams, the Mavs do still have some need on the wing. With the uncertainty that falls on Tim Hardaway Jr.’s future with the team, it would actually be smart for the Mavs to add another wing before the start of the season.

The hope is that Josh Green can take another step forward next season and be a consistent force for the team, but that is far from a guarantee. And I don’t imagine the Mavs are expecting Olivier-Maxence Prosper to be a consistent day 1 contributor either.

Oubre Jr. would be a great veteran scoring option that the Mavs could bring off the bench if acquired. Especially as a low-risk option, there aren’t many teams that wouldn’t be willing to make that type of gamble.

The Mavs could still make a move via trade but if nothing ever materializes on that front, perhaps making a move for Oubre Jr. could come to fruition.
