Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs
When the San Antonio Spurs won the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, there was a celebration. And that was because it mean they were going to be able to select Victor Wembanyama, who many considered to be the best NBA Draft prospect in history. Based on his measurables and intangibles alone, Wembanyama has the chance to be a special player. He has the chance to be one of the next faces of the NBA. Because of their developmental abilities, the Spurs were one of the best potential landing spots for him.
To the surprise of some, we got a sneak peek of Wembanyama in NBA Summer League. He didn’t play in many games, but in the two he did participate in, he very much looked the part after a slow start in his debut.
In his two summer league games, Wembanyama averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks per game on 41 percent shooting from the field. There are certainly some questions about his transition to the NBA, but he’s likely in the perfect spot to keep his development in the right perspective.
The Spurs are going to bring him along slowly and that’s probably best for him in the long run. But we saw the beginning of what could end up being a Hall of Fame career in the summer league. And it’s only the beginning for Wembanyama.
