The worst offseason moves made by the Boston Celtics
To say that the Boston Celtics had a great offseason would be a huge stretch. At the same time, it wouldn’t be fair to say that it was a terrible offseason for the Celtics too. At least in my opinion, there were two huge questionable moves made by the Celtics that will stand out above the rest.
Trading Marcus Smart
The first of such moves involved the Celtics trading Marcus Smart as part of a three-team blockbuster trade. Smart was moved to the Memphis Grizzlies in a larger deal that landed the Celtics Kristaps Porzingis (more on that later). But losing Smart could end up hurting the Celtics more than they realize.
You can make the argument that Smart was the heart and soul of the Celtics in the last few seasons. Even though the Celtics may have improved on paper with this move, there’s also a part of me that firmly believes the Celtics will miss Smart deeply both on and off the floor this season.
Could that cost them a championship? Who knows. It was certainly a risky move.
Signing Jaylen Brown to supermax extension
The other questionable move the Celtics made was signing Jaylen Brown to the richest contract in the NBA. It’s a huge investment for a player that is probably not one of the top 15 players in the NBA right now. He’s not even the best player on his own team, meaning the Celtics are likely going to have to give an even bigger contract sometime soon to Tatum.
I understand that there was really no alternative for the Celtics, but this contract is something that Brown is going to be grading against for the rest of his career.
