Worst offseason moves made by New York Knicks
Even though the New York Knicks were relatively quiet, there was one move that they made during the offseason that could end up hurting the team this season.
Trading Obi Toppin
On one hand, I understand the Knicks’ decision to trade Obi Toppin. New York was clearly concerned about their ability to strike a contract extension before he could hit restricted free agency next summer. At least for now, Toppin doesn’t translate to a starter and is likely going to command that level of money on the open market. Trading him, even if it was just for two future second-round picks, makes sense from a financial point of view for the Knicks.
At the same rate, the Knicks are now relatively thin in the backcourt behind Julius Randle. They’ll have to rely on Isaiah Roby and/or playing small ball. That may work in spurts but I’m not sure that’s something New York can hang its hat on all season long and into the playoffs.
This is a move that could end up hurting the Knicks this season, even if it made the most sense in the long run.
