If there’s one dark horse NBA Rookie of the Year candidate that many may be overlooking, it’s Chet Holmgren. After being selected No. 2 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, Holmgren was diagnosed with a Lisfranc injury to his right foot. He would go on to miss his entire rookie season, but he’s back and ready to take the Oklahoma City Thunder to the next level. And if his performance in the NBA Summer League was any indication, the Thunder could have another talented player on their hands.

Holmgren only played two games in the summer league, but he was clearly dominating whenever he was on the floor. The 21-year-old big man averaged 21 points, 10 rebounds, and nearly four blocks per game on 56 percent shooting from the field. There are certainly some things in his game that need polishing but there’s no question that he has Rookie of the Year potential.

If he can remain healthy, he’s going to be a big reason why the Thunder are able to take another step forward this season. OKC has been building something special for years, and this may finally be the year when it all comes together.
