Blake Griffin, Detroit Pistons

Assuming that the Detroit Pistons would be open to the idea of moving Blake Griffin, and they absolutely should be, he’s the type of star that the Knicks could probably easily acquire. The Pistons wouldn’t be asking for much and Blake’s contract could be absorbed by New York.

However, there are some real injury concerns when it comes to Blake. He missed the majority of the 2019-20 NBA season, even before the league hiatus, due to a knee injury. Even though he’s just 31 years old, there’s no given that Blake will be able to remain healthy for an entire season next year.

That should give the Knicks pause. New York hasn’t had the best of luck when it comes to trading for aging stars, even less so when they have traded for ones with nagging injury issues or “bad knees.”

Even though Blake would be the cheap (in terms of asking price) for a star, I’m not entirely sure the Knicks should go all-in for him. When healthy, he’s proven to be a really good player. However, that always seems to be a problem for him. And the Knicks shouldn’t want to go down that route…again (see Amar’e Stoudemire).
